Fuck Tumblr. Blogger's where it's at.

As a few of you may have noticed, I tried Tumblr yesterday. It's shit.

So, now back on my beloved Blogger I've decided to fill you guys in on what to expect over the christmas period. I'm going to be brutally honest and say that until a couple of weeks ago I hadn't even thought about it. And as if to rub salt into your metaphorical wounds, my initial thought when I actually remembered the festive season was literally: 'my public can go fuck themselves'.

But I've come round to thinking that this website is still slightly important and as such, you can expect the following:
  • A special, festive review or two.
  • An audio commentary for a film.
  • Some new fiction.
  • A completed essay.
  • A 'best of the decade' list.
Don't necessarily expect all of these to be on time. But they will happen.

Blog Post Number Fuck Off

It's 3:27am here in Newcastle, England. Doesn't really mean anything.

A few of you may have noticed that my Tweets have been becoming increasingly emo over the last few days. Don't worry, I'll live . I suppose that anyone reading my work could tell that I get depressed quite a lot - I don't care who knows. Just ignore the Tweet posts when they're depressed and they'll go away. If you were a really nice person you could send me an e-card?

I'm not going to explain why I get depressed or any inciting incidents to you guys. Not now, not ever. No, this information is only to get you to understand why some of the updates I promised haven't been available. I know that I promised an essay and two reviews (of which I have done one!) by now, and I apologise: I've had the weepys.

As such, don't expect much from me until I perk up. And, as I can't promise when that'll be (otherwise why would I be sad?), I'm afraid that means that there will be NO PROMISED UPDATES for a while. Until I'm back up on my feet I genuinely don't want to run the risk of disapointing any of you - making it safer to just give up.
In case anyone gets the wrong idea: I am not shutting down the website. Just making it easier on myself.
Thanks for the concern guys; I'll try to update properly soon, and you'll still get poetry.

A rare, but duely short, update.

Just thought I may as well update the ol' blog to give you guys a brief overview of where things are around here at the moment. I realise that thus far I have only updated with a single review for October. You can expect a review of Zombieland in the next couple of days, and possibly a review of The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnasuss following that. A couple of (very lovely) people sent me emails suggesting that I simply review the text's that I have to read for university instead of films for a while. I admire the enthusiasm, but I'm not going to do it for these reasons:
  • I have to apply different methods of close reading when analysing a text for the purposes of an essay than I would when reading a text to review it. This means that I wouldn't actually save much time at all.
  • I still have to write the fucking reviews. I know some may not seem that structured but, believe me, they are.
  • Somehow, and stop me if I'm wrong, reviewing things like Oroonoko and Paradise Lost might somewhat lessen my appeal as my critic. I know I've never exactly doubted the intelligence of my readers - but I don't assume it either.
So, thanks for the suggestions, but it's not gonna happen.

On the bright side there will be some fresh creative content up soon. My essay The Great Global Community is nearly finished and all ten pages will be available to download for free in the next two weeks. Aside from this, I'm making fairly regular poetry updates, and I'm hoping to get some more short fiction done soon (as I'm taking a break from Avarice for -mental- health reasons).

I'm going to let you have a rare glimpse into my social life for once. It can be summed up in this quote rather brilliantly:
'A little less love; a little more common decency.' - Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

Something has to give

Just a short blog to tell you that I'm revising my work schedule for this website a bit. Although I would love to continue to release 4 reviews, and 20 Twitter reviews a month, for you guys it's impossible if I want to keep working on my novel, pass my university course, and - you know - sleep.

So, basically what that entails is this: two full length reviews, and five Twitter reviews a month. That way I'll be able to continue with my life, as well as this website.

Holy mother of God

Anyone following my Twitter will notice that yesterday I posted a message saying that I have a stomach bug. I eventually decided against posting a second message which ran: "I don't wanna die, I don't wanna die, I DON'T WANNA DIE!" I thought that might alarm some people.

As it transpires, I have stopped being violently ill now. However, as I threw up roughly a third of my body mass yesterday and actually lost weight (not much, but any amount is worrying), I will not be posting a review this week. Nor will I be posting any poetry, short fiction or essays. This blog will have to suffice.

So, what to talk about? Well, first I think I'll mention that I start university next week (apt timing for a stomach bug) and I'm quite terrified. Not of meeting new people, or losing old friends, or even finding my way around campus. Nope, I'm scared because of one thing and one thing only: MONEY!

Far be it from me to question the wisdom of capitalism in any way, but does it not seem slightly insane that the first time I'm expected to have to deal with any large some of money debt is unavoidable? Admittedly I could work for several years in order to pay my own way through university, but by that point I'll have wasted a large number of my life's years on something I don't want to do. Moreover, I'm a writer. What use am I to anyone?

A lot of my friends have begun personal blogs about their own lives, I figure that now is as good a time as any to re-evaluate my stance on this. I still hold the belief that any information about yourself or the people around you should be with-held from the world around. Granted it can be claimed that when I write fiction, or essays, I reveal a lot about my views and experiences to my readers, and to a certain extent I agree. When you read fiction written by anyone you learn a lot about certain aspects of them, like what they think of relegion or murder. Similarily, when you read an essay, it deals only with certain aspects of a person. When you read a blog post you find out every single mundane thought that crosses in their consciousness.

This obviously leads to insanely boring, and specific material. There is no way that anyone who doesn't know the author of the blog personally will understand what has been written (unless said blogger has been established for well over a year), or care. Sooner or later, everyone realises that deep down they're extremely boring. When this happens I've seen blogs go in one of two directions, the first gives a result similar to what you see here where the blogger attempts to produce some sort of content such as reviews, fiction, or poetry. This is fine.

The other direction that blogs tend to lean towards is vile. It consists of relating everything happening in their friends lives and moaning about it for nothing more than an ego boost. I've heard literally thousands of excuses for this form of internet penis waving (or vagina waving) but essentially it all comes back to one thing: "it gets all my feelings out". So does a fucking journal.

The one argument that I've heard in favour of personal blogging which has even been remotely credible put forward that a blog is not unlike an auto-biograhpy. I contemplated this idea for several hours before dismissing it using the following logic: An auto-biography is written retrospectively, therefore it can deal with emotions in a more mature manner. A blog is written when emotions are fresh, it cannot be dealt with by anything more than a gut reaction. Gut reactions are often wrong. I would also like to say that I don't really approve of auto-biographies.

Even if you can get past everything I've just said and still make that next blog post as full of venom as the last, consider this. What are you achieving? If you're posting your personal feelings on the internet the chances are that you have no-one to talk to in real life. You're obviously attempting to compensate for a lack of social fullfillment by doing the most narcissistic thing possible. Try growing up, and using whatever writing talent you may have gained properly.

I realise that this may all come across as slightly egotistical when we consider that I spent the entire first three paragraphs moaning about the mundanities of my life. Grant me this though, at least I had something interesting to talk about later on. If you don't agree then fuck it, I'm a hypocrite. What're you gonna do? Shoot me?

Version 1.32 changes

A couple of small tweaks to the website. The most noticable being the addition of a download system so that I can upload files which have too much formatting to be put onto Blogger. Makes uploading a lot easier for me. Besides that, I've tweaked my banner a tiny bit, and formatted the home page slightly. It's not really noticable.

Thursday, 20 August 2009

In spite of it all, I'm running out of interesting Blog titles.

I got into university! I know that I rarely, if ever update this blog with anything remotely personal (with good reason I might add), but I figured that tiny tid-bit of information might do you all good. It's a positive thing.

In other news, I've started to do Twitter music reviews. It gives me ample room to review a song/album, and establish my taste in music to you guys as readers without having to write a massive back-catalogue. Marks my credibility as a critic somewhat as well.

Updates to the website. (Version 1.3)

It's taken me roughly three hours of non-stop work (I'm on holiday for fuck's sake), but I'm done. The "Projects" page has been updated to fit the formatting of the rest of the website, and "Latest:" archives have been added to the "Review", and "Projects" pages. There have been some changes to the partners section and the Green Day banners have been completely removed. Welcome to version 1.3 of BytesMedia.net!

Happy Anniversary!

I've been doing this whole crazy review thing for two years now! Whilst I admit my updates could be a bit more regular, I still think I've done a fair job. As a special treat, I'm going to completely overhall the projects page in the next few days. Hopefully it should be a lot more comprehensible.

Also, in the spirit of good blogging I'd like to direct you to my friend Liberty. She runs a fashion blog which is about as frequently updated as this used to be. Probably more so. Anyway, it can be found here, and I recommend checking it out if you enjoy fashion and blogging.

Depression + Illness = BLOG!

I'm feeling really ill and down right now so I fealt like it was time to blog.

Project statuses:

Novel: Good
Reviews: Good
Short Fiction: Good
Poetry: Good
Recaps: Not even started

Now that's out of the way I wanna talk to you about a bizarre film I caught at The Sage's (Newcastle) Americana festival. It's called The Devil and Daniel Johnston and was quite possibly the most moving documentary (hence lack of a review. I don't do documentaries) I have ever seen.

It's about a rubbish (at least in my opinion. The film calls him "cult") musician named Daniel Johnston. He has manic depression and quite possibly one of the worst life stories ever. I recommend you check it out. Although, it's not for the faint of heart.

As for Johnston's music; have a listen. I don't like it but music is exceptionally subjective. He's on tour later this year. I implore you to only go and see him if you like his music. Don't go to take the piss out of him. I do like the tour's artwork though:

Yeah. I think it's a frog. I honestly might buy the collectable toy.

I've been losing a lot of followers on Twitter recently. I have no idea why, I've been updating as normal. If anyone would like to explain what I'm doing wrong send me a tweet.

Sunday, 12 July 2009

Alright then.

I've been adding content to the website for a while now without blogging properly. Weekly reviews are back, my novel's going well (9,000 words) and I'm prepping to release some video-type content. I've got no idea how I'm going to record my audio commentary on Jason X, I think you might have to wait until August for that. There will be a short film up soon. I finished editing it recently and I've been lucky enough to get it shown at a cinéma. Unfortunatley, it's a one time showing and tickets aren't for sale without invitation.

Also, if you would like to help me in any way: head on over to TGWTG.com and look James R. Bell in the blog area. Vote high; I'm hoping to get picked up for the website's article section.

Still kicking

I'm alive and I'm still technically doing this! Still no idea why either.

I figured I'd give you guys an update beyond that the incessant Twitter variety to set a few things straight. Basically, I don't have time to do anything beyond maybe one review for you guys until the 15th of June. After the 15th my exams are done and I'll have a lot of free time to work on stuff. However, I don't want to commit to a massive amount of projects as I know I'm going to spend the majority of my free time writing for my novel in a desperate attempt to get it done before I go to university (studying English & Creative Writing for those who care). As such I'm only commiting to the following for my summer holiday:
  • Weekly text reviews
  • A completed text recap of Manga Spiderman
  • An audio commentary for Jason X
Anything beyond these is extra. Whilst I'm sure that some other content will arise, I'm not promising it.

Next on my list of things to talk (type) about is my novel. I would love to share it with you guys but I simply can't. I'm trying for publication as soon as it's done and if I publish anything on the internet then one or more of several bad things will happen. Sorry.

Although I can't share anything from the novel itself with you, I think I'm within my rights to put a draft cover up here for you guys to take a look at:

I like it.

I feel I somewhat need to express myself a little more than my sardonic quotation of Becket's novel "More Pricks than Kicks" via Twitter on the subject of my leaving school. I will miss a few people, I hope they know who they are, but for the majority I feel nothing. To the instituion I feel naught but hate and to the people who puppet the guise of "teacher"; scorn.

In short: fuck Whitley Bay High School.

I'll try and get a review up tonight.

The stand

You may have noticed a large amount of changes to the site over the last few weeks, especially in the 'Partners' section at the bottom of my main page. However, before I welcome out newest members, I have to say goodbye to two who've been with me since the beginning of the year. This is not due to anything beyond a divergence of interests in the area of blogging, does not reflect any anger or ill-feeling to either of the parties involved, and is ultimately down to my own beliefs on what content I wish to be featured on my online portfolio. Without further procrastination: Bladescope.com and Ham in ze Can shall no longer be featured on my website.

However, with the bad comes some good. Introducing: Robango Films, the poetry of Rory and World Only in Dreams. Click the links at the bottom of the site to find out what they're all about.

Some theoretical notes about Historicist Criticism.

Historic criticism (Historicism) looks at the time period in which a text is written and uses this information to provide context, and therefore, insight into a text’s meaning. The factors which can affect a Historicist reading of a text can be broken down into two loosely defined categories. These are:
  • The society of the time’s influence upon a text.
  • The personal experience of an author and its influence upon a text.

Whilst both of these branches of historic criticism can be applied to any text, on occasion one may be better suited for use when analysing a specific text. For example, when looking at George Orwell’s Animal Farm (a political satire) with historic criticism society’s influence upon the text will yield a far stronger argument than the influence of Orwell’s own life experience.

It could be argued that all literary criticism (barring practical criticism, which looks at the language, structure and form of the text exclusively) either stems from or relies upon historicism.

  • Marxist criticism – Marxist criticism focuses upon society’s influence upon an author, especially in terms of oppression and injustice. Therefore, in order to form a credible Marxist reading of a text historical information about society at the time of text’s creation and information about an author’s financial status at the time of writing is required.
  • Feminist criticism – Feminist criticism focuses upon the presentation of women within a text and, in more advanced readings, what this has to say about the society of the time’s treatment/view of women or an author’s view of women. In order to avoid an advanced Feminist reading being reduced to mere theory, historical information about women’s position in society and an author’s view on women is required.
  • Post-colonialist criticism – Post-colonialist criticism focuses on the affects of slavery and the British Empire upon a text. To craft a credible reading of a text using this criticism historical information about when the text was written and the British Empire is required.
  • Psycho-analytical criticism – Psycho-analytical criticism focuses upon the psychological profiles of both the characters within a text and the author of a text, often using Freudian archetypes to craft a complex argument about what a text really means. This method of criticism relies heavily upon a practical approach to imagery alongside historic information about an author’s life and mental condition.

Sorry internet.

New review is up. Twilight this time.

Still don't really have blogging time. Sorry >_<

Tuesday, 14 April 2009

Gosh, has it been that long?

I've just realised how little I've been updating. Oh well, it can't be helped.

Should have some stuff for you guys soon, hang tight. Summer's just around the corner.

Kevin the Talking Table.

A short sketch shot at whim at my friend Holly's house. Special thanks go to Patrick for playing Kevin and Holly for letting us use her house and filming us.

Uh-huh...

New review is up. It's There Will Be Blood.

Sorry, I don't have time to blog right now. Entering the final phase of my A-levels.

Vlog (23rd March 2009 5:03PM)

Just a quick Vlog update. A bit about Resi 5 and some other stuff.

Sunday, 22 March 2009

Just letting you know that I still care.

I'm going to be brief as I'm about to pass out from exhaustion but I promised a Blog (fucking Twitter, makes me say things) and I keep promises (most of the time).

I was on Facebook (yes I use it. No you cannot add me) earlier and I noticed that alot of my friends had been doing these "Top 5 movies/albums/novels/video games/TV shows" lists and posting them for all to see. They all have awful taste, unanimously (disregarding my friend Alfie who has impeccable film taste).

Now this got me thinking, undoubtadely a stupid idea at this time(1:30 AM, and I was up all last night). and ultimately led me to the conclusion that it could be my taste that's bad not theirs. Let's take a look and compare.

My "Top 5 films":
  1. The Godfather - General Consensus: The greatest or second greatest film of all time.
  2. The Dark Knight - General Consensus: A great blockbuster film with a lot of depth given it's genre.
  3. The assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford - General Consensus: A sublime retelling of the infamous outlaws life with stunning performances from Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck.
  4. Apocalypse Now - General Consensus: One of the most powerful war films of all time.
  5. WATCHMEN - General Consensus: Muddled at best (consensus not film)
So, according to the general consensus my film taste is fine. -Phew-

Oh and before I forget. How insensitive is this? Do people honestly think it's funny to mock a woman who died of cancer and left behind a family? I know she was a racist bitch, but it's still barbaric to mock the woman.

Thursday, 19 March 2009

A proper blog, with rants and everything... Honest!

Sorry about the lack of any decent updates since my WATCHMEN review on the 11th. Believe it or not I have been busy attempting to pass my A-levels and maintaining a social life. I'll do my best to correct it soon.

I tell you what, I'll promise you three things and give myself deadlines:

1. Manga Spider-man textual recap - 5th April 2009
2. At least two reviews in the next three weeks.
3. "Magic the Gathering: The Shadow Mage" video recap - 12th April 2009

I think that seems fair.

So, what's been bugging me recently? The fact that I actually have to think about this bodes badly for the rest of this blog post. Very badly.

AH-HAH! Comic Relief pissed me off! Comic Relief always pisses me off! Why? Why does something that is essentially good in nature piss me off? Because we have to do it, at all. So I guess it's poverty that pisses me off...

I'm burnt out from working on my ICT... Sorry.

Adverts

You may have noticed the banner for Green Day's new album, 21st Century Breakdown at the top of my website. If so, you might (legitamitely) be wondering why on earth I put it their. Green Day certainly aren't going to pay me for it, so why have I bothered?

To put it simply, I love the band. I want to give them my full support with their new album. Stop fucking emailing me about it.

This would be a long Blog if I had the energy, expect a bigger update tomorrow.

Vlog (15th March 2009, 1AM)

It's 1AM. I'm tired, annoyed and headachey. Vlog time!

WATCHMEN and a few other things.

Friday, 13 March 2009

It's so beautiful!

This page of my coursework is just... perfect?

*Coursework-gasm*

Wednesday, 11 March 2009

Finally...

I finally did that review I've been harping on about. I'm quite pleased with it, it's not my best but it'll do.

I might be dropping off the compass for the next week or so, coursework deadlines are pushing in and I really need to knuckle down if I want to get anything resembling a good grade. I'll try to keep up my reviews but I doubt it'll happen.

Monday, 9 March 2009

So ill.

I've been really ill for the last couple of days, hence the lack of a WATCHMEN review. I promise I'll get onto it as soon as possible.

In the meanwhile I hope these spoofs can tide you over.

I think I have a problem...

I just updated my Twitter profile three timesw in an hour. I didn't even mean too, it was a compulsion, similar to my "need" to log in to Facebook, MSN and Xfire. I think the internet has actuallly taken over my life.

Oh well.

Sunday, 1 March 2009

With apologies to the internet.

Sorry I've been gone so long. Partially due to a bad muscle spasm in the left hand side of my body which put me out of action for a few days, partially due to the fact that I actually want to pass my A-levels. It's looking like I'm gonna be gone for a few more days yet though so this is just an update to say I'm still alive.

P.S. Before I forget, I'm deciding to become a little bit more proffesional so expect to see a release schedule of sorts next week.

P.P.S. Expect a review of the Watchmen film next week as well.

P.P.P.S Happy Birthday Patrick!

Why is it that...

...Literay criticism is always longer than what it's a critique of? What on earth is the point? Let's use Hamlet as an example, thousands of interpretations have been spun from this one play. Literally millions of pages have been written in attempt to understand what Shakespeare meant by Hamlet. Isn't it possible he just wanted some quick cash? Even Kurt Vonnegut admitted that when he needed quick cash he would write a play. Couldn't that apply to Shakespeare?

Don't get me wrong, Shakespeare is truely awesome stuff (using to word in it's correct meaning, none of this awesome meaning cool crap) and does take some time to get your head round (has anyone ever descibed love as beautifully?) but wouldn't it be better to write a novel yourself rather than criticise everyone else?

I think I just insulted myself.

Website update.

The website is getting some -reasonably- sized updates either tonight or tomorrow morning. Nothing huge but it's a stream-lined version of what I've already got going on.

The only major difference that your going to notice is that my videos have been moved from YouTube and Revver over to Blip TV. There's quite a lot of reasoning behind this, some of it based on Blip's payment rates, but the change is happening mainly to allow me to upload a higher quality of video to an easier to use archive. Honest.

I'm also trying to add Twitter to the website so that you can get round the clock coverage of what I'm doing. When I'm hanging out with my friends, you'll know. When I'm working, you'll know. When I'm taking a shower, you'll know. Assuming your sad enough to watch my Twitter account 24 hours a day, every day of the year. (Which you undoubtedly are if you find this website interesting.)

I've given the projects page a massive change in terms of formatting and relevance. I wasn't happy with the old layout and the information was very out of date. Now the layout's a lot smoother and all the information is up to date. Finally, I'm adding advertisments to the website. Yeah, I sold out. Who gives a crap?

There should also be a review or two up later today. ^_^

Friday, 23 January 2009

A long awaited update, including for the first time ever, music and political discourse.

I'm back! My exams are done until the summer so I can get back to "dedicating" time to you "wonderful" people. I suppose I should probably get all my real "work" stuff out of the way first, so here we go.

Media of the Week has been on hiatus since the beginning of the year and as of now is becoming a monthly featurette exclusive to Revver. The exclusivity of this feature is due to two things:
  1. Revver pays me.
  2. Revver let's me have videos longer than ten minutes.
It's a simple choice really, isn't it? As for the change in schedule, I simply need more time to persue other projects, namely my writing work and the possibility of lengthier movie/video game reviews in a video format.

Moving swiftly onwards, my written reviews have been lax recently and for this I apologise. I've been far too busy with work for my exams and other projects to even begin using media products which I could review. I realise that this may sound bad, but let's just say the projects page of my site will be getting a massive update soon.

I guess I can also use my lame "people suck" excuse to cover for me absence, as per usual.

I think that's everything you need to know about work for now so let's move on into the promised land featured in the title and enter the realm of music.

Music

I don't like talking about music often, namely because my critical prowess are not exactly even adequate in this area. To put it bluntly, I don't understand music one jot. I like the music I like, that's all there is to it. I tend more towards Rock and Punk, but for the life of me I cannot figure out why.

Regardless of this I've compiled a list of three albums that you simply must listen to in my opinion and each blog post from this point on will be accompanied by a "What I'm listening to" section.

Albums:
Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols - The Sex Pistols

This is quite possibly the most important album in the entirety of punk culture. It defined at least one generation and still has massive influence on every punk or rock musician working today. The three most popular songs on the album, Anarchy in the UK, God Save The Queen and Pretty Vacant, are undoubtadley the three best songs on the album (with Anarchy in the UK and God Save The Queen contending for my top-spot) but the untamed fury, grit and musical power of The Sex Pistols is clear in each and every track.

Who's Next - The Who

This is the best album by The Who, one of the finest Rock bands to have ever exsisted. The proudest moment in my musical life is having seen this band live and by far the best moment of the concert was the first chord of Won't Get Fooled Again. This Album, and indeed the entirety of The Who's work is something that should quite simply not be missed.

American Idiot - Green Day

I love this album, I don't care what you think of me because of this fact. From the beginning of American Idiot through 'til the end of Whatshername, this album has not failed to entertain me once. It has an excellent crafter plot running throughout it and displays the band at their best, ever.

So there you have it. That's what music I listen too. Happy now? If pushed to recommend a few more bands I would probably say: Pendulum, Counting Crows, Basshunter, Joe!, In Her Head, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, Fatso, Blink 182, Buckethead, Daft Punk and Linkin Park.

Now to politics.

Politics

Obama is actually doing good things!
How rare is that? A politician who actually delivers what he promised. Change has come to America! Good, liberal-minded change! The state and religion are finally seperate, stem cell research is becoming a reality, abortion is being supported and Guantanamo Bay is being shut down! It's only just been a week, now if only British politics were this lively...

Promo

Go try this: http://tv.blinkx.com/

I've been assured it's fully legal and whatnot, but I can't vouch for it's practicality or anything like that as I haven't tried it. I'm only posting this to give these guys a hand.

Can't sleep

It's three in the morning, I can't sleep and I have nothing to do, which, besides being quite ordinary for me, is rather infuriating. So to wittle away the time I'm going to update my blog.

First off, apologies for my prolonged abscence, I've been busy with A-level exams. Content will cropping up again soon, but as of when I cannot say. Secondly, when video content does once again appear on the site, it will hence forth be almost exclusively hosted by Revver. Some people I know in real life have made YouTube an insanely hostile environment and until I can avoid them all (end of the year) the channel will be on hiatus.

I've been getting interested in performing stand-up comedy recently. I have an act sorted I just need a venue in the Newcastle area to perform in. Feel free to drop me a line at the usual (bytesmedia@live.co.uk) if you know anywhere. More on this as it develops.

Finally, my writing is going fine. My short story collection is nearing completion and I recently re-started my novel. I'll keep you posted ^_^.
